I had a guided tour of a research vessel a couple of weeks ago. While on the bridge I looked for the wheel. You know, the traditional brass bound wooden one that they have on ships. They do, don’t they?

Sadly, not any more. Not on the good ship !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

This is all you get. A little plastic knob which tells the autopilot where to go. Other ships have a joystick or (horrors!) a mouse.

A pirate walks into a bar. Attached to his crotch is a huge ship’s wheel! He walks up to the bar, and the bartender says “What’s that wheel for? Doesn’t it bother you?” the pirate replies “Aye matey, it drives me nuts.”

They have. A few years ago I was on a boat trip in Norway. As we were waiting to leave and return to Oslo the master showed me around the bridge and pointed out with distaste the little plastic knob that took the place of a wheel.

Things had definitely changed in his world and he didn’t like it one bit!
